What you Need to Know About Driving this 4th of July

Happy Independence Day!

Nothing quite says summer like the 4th of July holiday which millions will participate in between June 30th and July 4th, 2017. While it is an exciting time, July 4th is one of the most dangerous and deadliest holidays for drivers. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more people die in automobile accidents on July 4th than any other day of the year (followed closely by New Year’s Day). Additionally, according to the AAA, 37.5 million Americans will drive more than 50 miles this year to celebrate this summer holiday. If you’re going to be on the roads this holiday weekend, be aware of these tips.

Have Someone Else Navigate

Whether you have your passengers do the navigating or use a hands-free GPS system, make sure to keep your eyes on the road and follow the instructions of a trusted navigator. Familiarize yourself with the route you are going to take if you have never driven to your destination before. Nothing is more distracting and upsetting than not knowing where you are going and feeling like you are lost.

Avoid Drinking and Driving and Other Drugs

Plain and simple, don’t drink or use any other controlled substances including prescription drugs and get behind the wheel. It could cost your life or the life of someone else.

Pay Attention to Motorcycles

The beautiful weather this time of year means you will see more motorcycles on the roads. Along with increased traffic volume, they may be hard to see. Keep an eye out for motorcyclists and give them plenty of space to make their maneuvers.

Don’t Rush and Leave Early

Plan your trip ahead of time and avoid rushing. When you rush, you will be more likely to speed and not focus on the road. Additionally, you can avoid extra traffic on the roads if you leave before 7am.

Car Care Basics

Before you leave, inspect your vehicle or have a mechanic or trusted auto shop perform a safety check or basic maintenance service for you. Make sure the tires are properly inflated, fluids are at the proper levels, air conditioning system is working and more. Your vehicle will handle as you expect it to when it is healthy and well taken care of.

However you celebrate this Independence Day, we hope you enjoy time with family and friends.
