Make sure you check the following -

1. When your engine is cold, check your oil level before starting.
2. Check the transmission fluid level after starting the engine and letting it warm up.
3. Check all other fluid levels such as power steering fluid, brake fluid, anti-freeze and washer fluid.  Top off any fluids that may be low.
4. Check the battery terminals for corrosion and make sure the cables are tight.
5. Check all running lights to be sure they are all working.
6. Check all tire pressures; don't forget the spare tire.
7. Check wipers and washer for a clear vision.
8. Keep these items in the your trunk in case of an emergency:  One quart of oil, one gallon of drinking water, jumper cables, windshield washer fluid, some basic tools, gloves, a flashlight with extra batteries, a blanket and a First Aid Kit.
